Best Rust Armor: Kits, Protection and Inserts Compared
Which Rust armor protects best: prim, road sign, full metal, ballistic and heavy plate compared by protection per body area, inserts and material cost.
In short
- The best craftable armor for everyday use is Full Metal, once you have workbench 3 and the materials. Our example kit gives about 50% projectile protection for the head, 55% for the torso and 45% for the legs.
- Ballistic offers more protection but cannot be crafted. With the clothing listed below, our kit gives about 60% for the head, 65% for the torso and 55% for the legs.
- Armor inserts can improve a kit you already own, provided the actual armor pieces have free sockets. Not every piece comes with the maximum number shown.
- Heavy Plate protects the most (90% head, 75% torso and legs) at the cost of movement, vision and aiming. It can suit raid defence or Cargo, but is usually too restrictive for everyday roaming.
- Early on, start with what you can craft. A primitive kit uses basic resources; from workbench 2, Roadsign gives about 35% head, 50% torso and 45% legs. In the snow, you also need to account for cold protection.
Armor kits compared
Compare head, torso and legs separately: a strong chest plate will not help against a headshot. These figures are for the complete example kits, including the clothing worn underneath.
| Kit | Workbench | Head | Upper body | Legs | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prim: bone helmet, poncho, wood armor | 0 | 25% | 27% | 25% | For early bow and melee fights. Melee protection: head 40%, torso 60%, legs 55%. |
| Winter: wolf headdress, bandana, snow jacket | 1 | 35% | 27% | 30% | Snow: cold 64%, radiation 44% (measured in game) |
| Road sign: coffee can, road sign jacket and kilt | 2 | 35% | 50% | 45% | Mid game and roaming, up to 7 sockets for inserts |
| Full metal: facemask, chest plate, road sign kilt | 3 | 50% | 55% | 45% | Everyday PvP. With metal inserts: head 54%, torso 67%, legs 57%. |
| Ballistic: helmet, vest, leg armour | loot only | 60% | 65% | 55% | For later PvP fights. With metal inserts: head 60%, torso 77%, legs 67%. |
| Heavy plate: helmet, jacket, pants | 2 | 90% | 75% | 75% | Raid defense and Cargo only – slow and cold |
| Hazmat suit | 2 | 30% | 30% | 30% | Radiation 50% (measured), monuments |
- Prim: bone helmet, burlap shirt, hide poncho, burlap trousers, wood armor pants, wood armor gloves and hide boots.
- Winter: wolf headdress, bandana mask, snow jacket, pants, wood armor pants, wood armor gloves and hide boots. Crafting the bandana requires an unlocked skin.
- Road sign: coffee can helmet, hoodie, road sign jacket, pants, road sign kilt, road sign gloves and boots.
- Full metal: metal facemask, hoodie, metal chest plate, pants, road sign kilt, road sign gloves and boots.
- Ballistic: ballistic helmet, hoodie, ballistic vest, pants, ballistic leg armour, tactical gloves and boots. Tactical gloves must be purchased or found.
- Heavy plate: helmet, jacket and pants only. Hazmat: the suit alone.
Which kit when?
- Just spawned: bone helmet, hide poncho and wood armor only cost bone, cloth, leather and wood and mainly protect against melee.
- Farming and roaming: You can craft Roadsign at workbench 2. Our complete kit takes 4 road signs, 70 leather, 10 sewing kits, 95 cloth and 75 metal fragments. Up to 7 sockets let you add inserts.
- PvP with workbench 3: Full Metal mainly improves head protection over Roadsign. Found metal inserts can raise protection further; compare each body region separately when weighing it against Ballistic.
- Defending a raid or Cargo: heavy plate – you last longer, but you move slower, freeze and aim worse.
- Monuments with radiation: hazmat or suitable clothing with lead inserts; how much each monument needs is in the radiation guide.
- Snow: wolf headdress, bandana and snow jacket keep you warm. For camouflage in snow see camo skins.

Armor inserts: more protection per socket
Many armor pieces have sockets for inserts. An insert raises the protection of exactly the piece it sits in. Full metal and road sign have up to 7 sockets each, ballistic up to 6, heavy plate none. The actual number depends on the individual item; the maximum is not guaranteed. All insert examples assume the full socket count and matching inserts.
| Insert | Effect per insert | Crafting |
|---|---|---|
| Metal Armor Insert | +4% projectile, +2% melee | Loot only |
| Wooden Armor Insert | +2% projectile, +2% melee | Workbench 1: 150 wood |
| Lead Armor Insert | +5% radiation, +1% projectile and melee | Workbench 2: 4 HQM |
| Asbestos Armor Insert | +8% explosion, +1% projectile and melee | Workbench 2: 50 metal fragments |
Skins for your armor
Ordinary cosmetic skins change the look, not the protection. Special variants such as the arctic suit have their own values. Many sets come matching for facemask, chest plate and kilt – every design per piece is in the skin catalog.

Common questions
What is the best armor in Rust?
For everyday use full metal, because it can be crafted and gets close to ballistic with inserts. Ballistic protects more but only comes as loot. Heavy plate has the highest protection, but because of speed and cold it only makes sense for raid defense and Cargo.
What is in a full metal kit?
Metal facemask, metal chest plate and road sign kilt, plus hoodie, pants, gloves and boots. With road sign gloves the complete kit costs about 33 HQM, 150 leather, 21 sewing kits, 80 cloth, 2 road signs and 15 metal fragments.
How does armor protection work in Rust?
Each piece protects the body area it covers by a percentage. If several pieces cover the same area, their values add up – we checked this in game. A head shot therefore only counts what covers the head. Our kit table counts gloves towards the upper body and shoes towards the legs; that is a modelling assumption.
Where do I get ballistic armor and the BDU?
Ballistic armor is loot-only. The BDU (Battle Dress Uniform) needs a separate note: Facepunch announced it as loot alongside Ballistic on 4 June 2026, but our in-game check on 12 October found the shirt and pants available only through the admin console. The BDU Shirt lists 25% projectile and 20% melee protection. The BDU Pants list 20% projectile and 15% melee protection.
Is the arctic suit better than the hazmat suit?
It depends on the goal: the hazmat has 50% radiation and 8% cold protection, the arctic suit 33% each. Both give 30% against projectiles. The arctic suit requires the Arctic Pack (DLC).
Do skins make armor better?
Ordinary cosmetic skins only change the look. Special variants such as the arctic suit have different protection values, so check these separately. Camouflage colors can also affect how easily other players spot you.
