Rust radiation protection: how much for each monument?

Every monument with the radiation protection it needs at a glance – plus which clothing is enough, what lead inserts add and when even a hazmat does not help.

In short

  • For normal operation, our table lists 11% radiation protection for Airfield and 26% for the deeper Military Tunnels. Requirements vary by area; check the route you intend to take.
  • A hazmat provides 50%. The 52% targets for special areas of Launch Site and Power Plant are planning values, not our own in-game measurements. They are not a guarantee of zero radiation damage.
  • Lead inserts add +5% each – only in pieces with a free insert socket.
  • During a puzzle reset and near the warhead in the silo no gear helps: get out at once.
  • In the outfit configurator you pick a monument and get a matching kit with skins.

Reading your protection in the game

Open your inventory: next to your character are your protection values, including radiation protection with the radiation symbol. The values of all pieces add up. When you enter an irradiated area, Rust shows the radiation there – if it is above your protection, your radiation poisoning rises.

Rust inventory: character in the snow jacket kit with protection values 18% explosion, 64% cold, 44% radiation and 50% bite
The snow jacket kit from the table below in the game: 44% radiation protection next to the radiation symbol, plus 64% cold protection. Worn with skins – skins do not change the values.

How much each piece of clothing gives

GearRadiationGood for
Hazmat Suit50%Everything up to 50%. One piece, but it takes the whole body – little combat protection.
Snow jacket kit44% (measured)Wolf headdress, bandana, snow jacket, pants, wood armor pants and gloves, hide boots. Warm and radiation-proof.

Snow Jacket20%A strong single piece for your own kit.
Heavy Plate (each)7%Combat protection with some radiation protection.
Hoodie, pants, jacket, shirt5% eachQuickly 10% together – enough for light monuments.
Lead Armor Insert+5% per insertTopping up a kit that is just short.

When even good protection is not enough

  • Puzzle reset: when a monument puzzle resets, strong radiation builds up around the loot rooms. According to Facepunch the core cannot be survived – the weaker edge is the warning. Get out at once.
  • High-radiation areas: Parts of Launch Site and Power Plant require more than a standard hazmat’s 50%. Check your total with fitted lead inserts. This does not automatically protect you from the special radiation during a puzzle reset.
  • Warhead in the Nuclear Missile Silo (level 5): strong radiation even with high protection. Keep your distance.
  • Cargo Ship: there is a radiation alarm on departure. Leave the ship in time.
  • Radioactive water: avoid it, and never feed it into sprinklers – Facepunch made radwater sprinklers stronger as a weapon against players in September 2026.

Common questions

Is a hazmat enough for every monument?

For almost every normal route, yes. Not in the strongest special areas of Launch Site and Power Plant, near the warhead in the silo, or during a puzzle reset.

Does an empty socket count as radiation protection?

No. Only an installed Lead Armor Insert adds the +5%.

Do skins change radiation protection?

Ordinary cosmetic skins leave the stats unchanged: a Whiteout Hoodie protects just like a regular hoodie. Special variants such as the Arctic Suit have their own stats, so do not treat it as a purely cosmetic hazmat skin.

Do the values apply on every server?

On vanilla servers, yes. Modded servers can change radiation and protection values – check the in-game display there.
