Buying Rust skins cheaply: Steam market, Skinport or item store?

Where Rust skins really are cheaper – with numbers from more than 5,400 price comparisons, the fees on both markets and the scams you should know.

Updated · 3 min read

In short

  • For 91% of Rust skins with prices on both markets, Skinport was cheaper. On average the same skin cost 35% more on the Steam market.
  • The gap is biggest for cheap skins under €5. Between €5 and €100 the two are often close – that is where comparing pays off most.
  • On the Steam market you pay 15% fees on top, and Steam wallet money can never be withdrawn. If you already have wallet funds, though, skins are a good use for them.
  • New skins are available only in the item store during their first week.
  • Put the skins you want into the comparison list: Rustomize shows on which market your whole selection costs least.

With cheap skins, the minimum Steam market fee eats a big part of the price. In the middle it is close – sometimes one market leads, sometimes the other.

How to buy for the least money

  1. Find your skins in the price comparison and add them to the comparison list with +.
  2. At the bottom of the list you see the total per marketplace and how many of your skins are available there right now.
  3. Buy on the market with the lowest total. If single skins are missing there, get only those elsewhere.
  4. On Skinport: open the skin under “My items”, request the Steam trade offer and accept it in Steam.

Spotting scams

In Rust a confirmed trade cannot be reversed, and Valve does not restore stolen items. These are the most common scams:

  • “I accidentally reported you”: someone tells you your account was reported and sends you to a supposed Steam employee. According to Valve this is always the start of a scam.
  • Fake login pages: “vote for my team”, free skins, or a trading site that shows a Steam login window inside the page. Only enter your password on steamcommunity.com or store.steampowered.com – check the address bar.
  • API key scam: once someone has access to your account, they create an API key. A bot then cancels your real trade offers and sends look-alikes. Check steamcommunity.com/dev/apikey for any key you do not recognise.
  • Scanning a QR code: a stranger's QR code scanned with the Steam app can log the scammer into your account. Only scan QR codes you opened yourself on the official Steam site.
  • Payment outside Steam: money, gift cards or keys cannot be put into a Steam trade. Whoever asks for money first is gone once it arrives.

Common questions

Is Skinport legitimate?

Skinport is one of the big marketplaces for Rust and CS2 skins, based in Germany, with payouts by bank transfer and identity checks above certain amounts. As everywhere: only sign in through the real address skinport.com.

Can I withdraw my Steam wallet balance?

No. Steam wallet funds cannot be withdrawn or transferred to another account.

Do item store skins get cheaper later?

It varies. Many skins later cost less on the market than in the store, popular limited ones often more. You can see the history on every skin page on Rustomize.

Are the prices on Rustomize live?

No, these are saved price snapshots. Skinport prices are stored every four hours, Steam prices several times a day. The exact time is shown with each price.
